Adult TCM




On March 17, 2021, a bone marrow transplant from a family donor to an adult patient was performed at the Kyiv Bone Marrow Transplant Center. The operation was carried out as part of a pilot project to change the mechanism of financial support for surgical treatment of organ transplants and other anatomical materials, this is the first such transplant. Until now, such transplants have not been possible for adult patients in Ukraine.

"Doctors have been preparing for this particular transplant since February. It was then that 18-year-old Oleksandr was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a very severe form. The diagnosis was made at the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Hospital in December 2020. After the consultation, a decision was made on the possibility of allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, and given the serious condition, the patient was hospitalized, "said Valentina Ginzburg, director of the Department of Health . the donor is the patient’s brother, and urgent preparations for allogeneic transplantation have begun. It is extremely important when doctors unite, share experiences for the sake of saving lives and the development of medicine in Ukraine! Thanks to the systematic work of the Ministry of Health, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and health care institutions, the first family transplant for an adult patient has finally taken place.

The Kyiv TCM center is the only place in the country where such operations were performed. In total, 6 of them have been made since 2003. The last one was in 2008. Then, due to the lack of specific equipment, they were forced to stop.
Since then, all adult Ukrainians with blood cancer and plastic anemia, who even had a donor among their relatives, have been forced to travel abroad.
In 2020, 138 adult Ukrainians were sent to TCM abroad at the expense of the Ministry of Health. One such operation is over 3.5 million hryvnias. Currently, transplants in Ukraine are fully paid for by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. The cost of TCM - 1 million 360 thousand!
