Coronavirus vaccine: who develops it and when to expect it

Because of the coronavirus for more than six months, the whole world is in quarantine. Experts predict that the infection will gain momentum, and the pandemic will decline in two cases: when the majority of the world’s population becomes ill or when the COVID-19 vaccine is invented. We tell you who is developing the vaccine and when it may appear.

Who is developing the vaccine

At the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic in Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky promised to pay a million dollars to those who invented the vaccine or medicine for COVID-19. After some time, it became clear that no one in Ukraine is developing a vaccine at all.
According to the WHO, more than 200 potential vaccines against COVID-19 are being developed worldwide. Yes, many countries are looking for solutions to the problem: the United States, Britain, China, Israel, and Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands have formed an alliance to accelerate development. They all have different approaches to development and are at different stages of the process.

Where the vaccine is tested

In order to create a vaccine, it takes not only a lot of resources, but also a lot of time. After all, according to WHO regulations, before the vaccine enters mass production, it must pass a number of tests, including three phases of testing on volunteers. Even before that, the vaccine is also undergoing clinical trials. The UK was one of the first to test the vaccine on humans. Thus, at the end of April, more than 800 healthy volunteers aged 18 to 55 were involved in the first phase of the trials. The vaccine was created by scientists from the University of Oxford, and they are 80% sure that it will be successful.
Germany also began testing on humans in late April. It was planned that the research will take place in several stages, where different numbers of volunteers will be recruited. In addition, several potential vaccines are being developed in Germany.
In early September, it became known that clinical trials of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus vaccine, developed by the German company BioNTech and its American partner, the pharmaceutical manufacturer Pfizer, will be conducted in Germany. The Paul Ehrlich Institute has already approved the second and third phase tests. They want to involve more than 30,000 volunteers in the testing. If the tests are successful, both companies plan to apply for the vaccine on the market in October. After that, up to 100 million doses will be on the market by the end of this year, and by the end of 2021 it is planned to produce more than 1.3 billion doses of vaccine.

Three COVID-19 vaccines have been approved in China for testing. In addition, the Chinese vaccine against COVID-19 in animal experiments has shown strong protection against the virus. By the way, China became the first country to patent a coronavirus vaccine in March 2020.
The vaccine is also being tested in Indonesia. The test, which will last six months, will involve 1,620 volunteers. This vaccine is also in the third phase of clinical trials and, if all goes well, the country plans to produce 250 million doses and release them on the market.

In the United States, the vaccine began to be tested on humans in mid-March. Only 45 volunteers were selected here for testing. However, in the United States this is not the state, as in other countries, and private pharmaceutical companies. Billionaire Bill Gates in the United States is currently sponsoring seven of the most promising vaccine development projects. According to Bloomberg, according to Bill Gates, large-scale production of the vaccine will be able to begin only within a year.

Tests are being conducted in other countries, but it is difficult to say when the vaccine will be released and who will be the first to make it. However, certain predictions can already be made.

When will the coronavirus vaccine appear

? In China, it is believed that one of the vaccines may be ready in September. But more realistic dates - the beginning of 2021.

Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is confident that the effectiveness and safety of one of the vaccines will be proven by the first quarter of 2021. He added that by the beginning of 2021 there is hope to receive a couple of hundred million doses.
Many countries and laboratories are now chasing the vaccine, but everything should go perfectly, because mistakes can cost lives.

The World Health Organization predicts that the coronavirus vaccine will not be widely used until at least 2021, despite the fact that many studies are already showing progress.
