For people to live: profession - surgeon

In Ukraine, medical workers are welcomed in the summer - traditionally on June 20, and surgeons - on September 17. These are official professional holidays. And we love them very much, because they are the holidays of people for whom the profession is a way of life, and who save the lives of children and adults every day! And we believe that people who have chosen a profession to save others should be talked about as often as possible. And do not look for any reasons to mention caring professionals who fight for the lives of patients to the last.

The Fund has long published conversations with doctors about medicine, articles and news about medical institutions, about life, burnout, help and much more that is interesting to our readers. And today we decided to start a new column on one of the most time-consuming, complex and responsible sections of medicine - surgery. This section will not be filled with medical statistics, and its guests and participants are not all the doctors we work with. This column is more likely to be a way to support and say thank you to every healthcare professional!

The first guest in our column "Profession - surgeon" was a pediatric surgeon, head of the department of endovascular treatment of congenital and acquired heart defects of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after MM Amosova Igor Alexandrovich Ditkovsky.

- Igor, tell us how you decided to become a surgeon? What influenced your choice?

History is not unique for its time. But the unique profession of endovascular surgeon.
Like everyone else, after graduating from medical school, I went through the procedure of state division. Once within the walls of the Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after MM Amosov, was aimed at an internship in the department of endovascular methods of treatment of congenital heart disease. He was trained under the guidance of Professor Yuriy Panichkin, who is the founder of pediatric endovascular surgery in Ukraine, and the department itself can be called an alma mater for professionals in the country.

- Do you remember your first operation? Was it scary to do it? After all, this is a great responsibility.

It was incredibly interesting to just see such operations. Do the first yourself - unforgettable. Was it scary? Fear increases self-control. After all, good concentration and understanding of every movement are important. This is something really special. Due to a small puncture in the vessel, you can achieve a result that can be compared with major heart surgery. Even today, years later, it is exciting and exciting.

- Have you ever had the idea to leave medicine and change your profession?

I love to develop, and medicine requires constant development from me. So we are comfortable together and I’m not going to go.

- What is the most difficult part of your work?

Cases in which it is not possible to help the patient. Sometimes, this happens due to late diagnosis of the defect. And sometimes, it is the fault of the patient himself, who for various reasons postponed his treatment, and when he decided, it turned out that time was lost and the verdict was "inoperable". It is always difficult to go through such fates ... - What is the most pleasant thing in work?

Any help that has benefited the patient. It is very nice to see my first patients, who are now adults and living full lives.

- Who is more difficult to work with (operate) an adult or a child?

A sick adult is not much different from a child. He is just as afraid, and he also doesn’t always understand why it happened. But they are all equally happy to hear about the successful operation.

- How do you feel when you go to the operating room and realize that this child’s life depends on you?

Responsibility and gratitude for the trust.

- Do you have a professional dream?

That the lead vest became weight no more than kilogram (its usual weight about 10 kg.) And if seriously, it would be desirable to catch time when the doctor will work in conditions of full maintenance.

- Do you remember the children you operated on or rescued? Or, conversely, do you want to abstract from patients to save yourself?

For more than ten years of practice I have operated on many, it is difficult to remember all. But patients themselves often remind themselves, congratulate on professional holidays, consult about other diseases that are not related to heart disease. Which is probably a sign of trust. But usually especially rare or complex operations are remembered for a lifetime.

- What advice would you give to children who, for example, will read your interview and want to become doctors?

Consciously approach the choice! Be interested in real aspects of the future profession. If possible, visit the desired place of work and spend a day with a representative of the chosen specialty. This will help you not to be disappointed in the future. And be sure to learn English, because all modern and up-to-date information is freely available on the Internet.

- What are the ways to prevent emotional burnout?

You should always find time for impressions. Well, do not be lazy to look for inspiration in simple things. Adequate rest is also mandatory.

- What qualities do you need to become a good surgeon?

Lots of perseverance, a little luck, good logic, imagination, and creativity. Definitely the ability to work in a team. - Is a doctor a profession that constantly requires training and development of skills?

Certainly! There is no moment when you have already studied everything and do not need to know more. Progress is moving the planet forward, and medicine is at the forefront of the attack.

- Is there anything you can change in cardiac surgery in our country?

Increasing the level of trust and prestige of the profession of both doctors and surgeons in particular.

- In general, is surgery developing in Ukraine?

Today the level of development of surgery in Ukraine is not inferior to world standards. Unfortunately, like all medicine, the industry is underfunded.

- How do you assess the situation with quotas, which is happening in our country in general?

As far as I know, public procurement covers up to 30% of demand. The rest of the costs are borne by patients or funds.

- Igor, at the end of the conversation, you can say a few words to all children, parents, readers who may want to become surgeons.

I sincerely wish success to all who are going to dedicate themselves to this profession. It is at the same time exciting, difficult and requires constant improvement, sometimes self-sacrifice, but gives great happiness!
