In Ukraine, a child was given prosthetics for the first time

The first child with an amputation due to a military injury was given a prosthesis in Ukraine: 6-year-old Maryna had an improved prosthesis, now it is similar to a real leg.

Marinka from the Kherson region has been undergoing treatment and rehabilitation in Okhmatdyt for 10 months. At the beginning of May, the girl was injured: a projectile hit her house, causing serious injuries to the child's legs. In the Kryvyi Rih hospital, the girl's leg was amputated above the knee, but her life was saved. Later, Marinka underwent long-term treatment in the department of orthopedics and traumatology and physical and psychological rehabilitation in Okhmatdyt. The hospital team became a second family for Marina.

When the girl entered Okhmatdit, she was almost constantly lying down. She occasionally sat on the bed, but could not move on her own. «The main tasks of rehabilitation before prosthetics were: to strengthen the muscles of the body, to prepare the leg for prosthetics, to teach the child to maintain coordination on one leg and to move freely in space», — shares Nazar Borozniuk Nazar Volodymyrovych Borozniuk, physical therapist of NDSL «Okhmatdyt».Marynka and Nazar Boroznyuk. A psychologist has been working with Marina and her family in the hospital since the first day. Providing emotional peace and positive emotions is the key to successful treatment. Marina and a psychologist happily engage in art therapy: they draw, sculpt, carve, create beauty. «This ensures a decrease in the level of anxiety,» says the psychologist of the «Okhmatdit» NDSL Tetyana Pidkova Tatyana Akhmatova.

Marina became the first child who received prosthetics in Ukraine. Her parents wanted to get their daughter prosthetics in the Motherland, in order to avoid complicated flights and to have the possibility of constant help from a rehabilitation specialist and prosthetist.

Prosthesis for the girl was made in Kyiv at Ortotech-Service. Prosthetist Oleksandr Stetsenko says that this is the first prosthesis he made for a child. Children's prosthetics is much more complicated than adult prosthetics, because children are constantly growing and changing, and the procedure also requires a more attentive approach to the patient.

Now the girl's prosthesis has been improved and made cosmetic — similar to a real leg. This will help Marina overcome her psychological fear and socialize among her peers. The hospital team continues to work with Marina and her family and wishes them good health.
