Individual approach and self-realization: how people with disabilities work at McDonald’s




According to official statistics, there are more than 3 million people with disabilities in Ukraine, and only 10% of them are employed. In fact, experts say the situation is even worse. Despite the legislative quota on the employment of people with disabilities, all this is often only fictitious.

Earlier, we launched a series of materials on how large Ukrainian companies employ people with disabilities and we talk about this in detail. Today they shared their experience with us at McDonald’s.

The company most often employs people with hearing impairments

. McDonald’s remains one of the most popular chains of fast food restaurants. The company tells us that, in their opinion, business should give everyone the opportunity to realize themselves and become part of society.

“People with disabilities are sometimes limited only by external circumstances. At the same time, they may have high potential and a desire to realize themselves. McDonald’s currently employs 410 people with disabilities, which is 4.68% of the total number of employees, " the company said.

Despite the legal quota, according to which companies must employ at least 4% of people with disabilities from the general staff, McDonald’s throughout its activities in Ukraine always exceeds this quota.

The company most often employs people with hearing impairments - 64% of the total mass of people with disabilities, with common diseases - 13%, people with childhood disabilities - 10%, with visual impairments - 7%, with musculoskeletal disorders - 3, 5%, ” the company told us.
But the turnover of staff among workers with disabilities is twice less than the overall annual average. In terms of duration of work in the company there are 64 record holders with disabilities who have worked in the company for more than 10 years, 82 people - from 5 to 10 years.

Jobs for people with disabilities are selected individually

At McDonald’s, people with disabilities hold a variety of positions and have exactly the same career opportunities as all other employees. Yes, among them are cashiers, training instructors, managers, restaurant director and hospitality expert. Mostly restaurant workers who work in the hall, at the checkout, in the kitchen and McDrive.

"We approach everyone individually, understanding their needs and limitations. For example, when it comes to people with hearing impairments, they can not communicate with customers, so often work in the hall or at night shifts, help prepare restaurants for the opening. If a person cannot lift weights, he will not be sent to deliver products, where the movement of any boxes, movement in warehouses, " - said the company’s press service.

The company adds that when employing people with disabilities, it is obligatory to provide a medical certificate, which prescribes all the restrictions. And in accordance with these restrictions, an individual job description is drawn up for each person.
As for how customers react to people with disabilities, no extraordinary reaction from visitors to the company was noticed.

"The country’s leadership is introducing a special quota for companies to help people with disabilities encourage employers to hire such employees. McDonald’s provides a level playing field for all employees. The only difference that could be highlighted is the additional number of vacation days depending on the degree of disability of the employee. This is provided for at the legislative level and is individually prescribed for everyone, ” the company concluded.
