Okhmeda’s new building: what it looks like and what surprises it

In the summer of 2020, a new building of the National Children’s Specialized Hospital "Okhmatdyt" was finally opened in Kyiv, which could not be completed for many years. We talk about what the renovated hospital looks like.

The new building of "Okhmatdyt" was built for ten years

The construction of a new medical and diagnostic complex "Okhmatdyt" began back in 2011, but two years later - in 2013 - it was stopped. Once again, construction resumed in 2016. Then, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to divide the project into two launch complexes: 23.5 thousand square meters and 43.5 thousand square meters.

The first unit was built in 2018, and in April 2019 it was opened. This part of the complex is equipped with modern medical equipment for patients with complex diagnoses. It was planned that Okhmatdyt will have several units, which will have 10 modern surgical departments, five oncology and hematology departments, as well as a diagnostic department.

Construction of the second block of the new complex was completed only in the spring of 2020 and is scheduled to open on June 1.

"Okhmatdyt" is finally ready! On April 1, the main construction works in the new building were completed. Now it’s time to deliver and connect medical equipment. We plan to open it on June 1, the Children’s Day, " said President Volodymyr Zelensky.

But due to the coronavirus pandemic, the date had to be postponed to the end of July. Thus, on July 7, Minister of Health Maxim Stepanov said that the postponement of the opening of the new phase of the National Children’s Specialized Hospital "Okhmatdyt" is due to the fact that in the coronary crisis there was a delay in the supply of imported medical equipment.

Opening of the building: the best equipment and new opportunities The

officially completed building was opened on July 29. It consists of six branches. There is an oncology and diagnostic department, hematology, etc.

"The launch of new departments is extremely important for sick children, because for them it is an opportunity to be treated at the highest world level. Modern treatment conditions and medical equipment, better diagnostics, excellent living conditions for children and their parents, high quality medical care provided by our specialists - all this to save the lives of our young patients, "said the hospital. Thanks to modern equipment, it has become possible to perform a bone marrow transplant at Okhmatdyt. Maxim Stepanov said that annually about 1 billion UAH. the state spends on the treatment of children abroad, this amount is not enough, because treatment abroad in comparison with Ukraine is several times more expensive, sometimes several times more expensive.

"This is the discovery of a very important area - the treatment of children with cancer. This is what was not, this is the oncology department, bone marrow transplantation, what our children need. Now the number of children who will receive such medical care will increase significantly. This is the coolest equipment that exists in the world, "Stepanov said.

It was reported that with the opening of the new building, Okhmatdyt will be able to perform four times more bone marrow transplant operations.

What the new hospital

building looks like The new building looks bright and futuristic. Each branch has different colors and accents, there is clear navigation everywhere. The hospital also has games rooms, libraries, and wards with bathrooms and modern furniture. In the corridors there are comfortable sofas, in the dining rooms - colorful tables, lots of lighting everywhere, huge screens hang on the walls, the library has armchairs-bags and dozens of shelves with various books. The walls in the wards are painted, and the cabinets are stylized as apartment buildings. There is also a children’s playground on site.

For children who are forced to stay in the hospital for a long time, a "School of Superheroes" has been created here, where they can pull up not only school subjects, but also study robotics or other "superhero" subjects. And for their achievements, children are rewarded with superhero cloaks.

In 2021, UAH 1.2 billion will be allocated for the retrofitting of the National Children’s Specialized Hospital "Okhmatdyt". According to Deputy Minister of Health Svetlana Shatalova, in 2020 about 20,000 children were treated in the new building of the hospital.

"With full launch, this number will increase to 32,000. Currently, the institution has 650 beds, 789 are planned. The six operating rooms we have now will double. 10,000 operations will turn into 18,000, ”the deputy minister added.
