Our clinics. Targeted diagnostics

Department of Endocrinology, Okhmatdet Clinic

We continue to talk about the clinics where Ufonda’s wards are treated. One of our regular partners is the Department of Endocrinology of the OHMATDET Clinic. Our cooperation has lasted since 2011. The Fund regularly raises funds for the purchase of insulin pumps and consumables for patients with diabetes.

The Department of Endocrinology was established in 1981 within the structure of the National Children’s Specialized Hospital (NDSB) OKHMATDET. About 800 children pass through the hospital every year. It diagnoses and treats the full range of endocrine disorders.
Ufond cooperates with the Department of Endocrinology of NDSB OKHMATDET in the field of "type 1 diabetes mellitus". Children with this diagnosis need insulin. The disease is not curable and imposes certain restrictions on lifestyle. Not immediately the child can master all the necessary procedures: subcutaneous injections with an insulin syringe or syringe-pen, measurement of blood sugar, counting bread units. This means that mothers of sick children are usually deprived of the opportunity to work. But even with all the prescriptions of doctors, diabetes can not always be compensated. Many insulin-dependent children suffer from fluctuations in blood sugar levels. The disease gives complications to blood vessels, heart, nervous system.
In this situation, the insulin pump is the only salvation. The device mimics the function of a healthy pancreas, allows you to inject insulin constantly, in small doses. However, for many families, buying an insulin pump is not affordable. In addition, consumables are required to service the device. Parents of sick children can only hope for a miracle, for the support of strangers. That is why the Fund is helping children with diabetes. Ufond readers are raising funds to purchase insulin pumps and supplies. Young patients and their parents come to the endocrinology department of the NDSB OHMATDET to install the pump. Here they are taught to use the device. With pomp, children become more independent, less attached to home, able to attend clubs and even play sports.
The School of Diabetes Self-Control has been operating on the basis of the department for ten years now, where children learn to manage their disease. Thanks to this work, the number of children with acute complications of diabetes has decreased fivefold.
About 7,000 children with diabetes live in Ukraine. If 15 years ago all children with persistent hyperglycemia (high blood glucose) were diagnosed with "type 1 diabetes", now the department is conducting a differential diagnosis of different types of diabetes. Patients with suspected MODY diabetes (adult-onset diabetes) undergo genetic testing. According to the World Endocrinological Community, the prevalence of MODY diabetes is 5 to 10% of all cases of type 1 diabetes. Thus, in the future, 350-700 Ukrainian children, previously considered insulin-dependent, may be diagnosed with MODY diabetes. Therefore, the treatment regimen will change. After all, some types of MODY diabetes do not require insulin therapy.
