The first kidney transplant for a child in Okhmatdyt

The other day on the basis of NDSL "Okhmatdyt" was successfully performed a kidney transplant to a 12-year-old girl from Kharkiv region. Her father became an organ donor. This event is another step that brings Ukraine closer to full transplant independence, which is quite possible in the next three years.

According to the Ministry of Health, the annual need for transplant operations in Ukraine is up to 5,000. Until recently, almost all of these people had to wait several years for surgery abroad, and only about 100 such operations were performed in Ukraine. One and a half years ago, the Ministry of Health achieved legislative changes that allowed launching a transplant program in Ukraine. Okhmatdyt is one of 38 institutions where such unique operations are performed.

"Currently, our state allocates 1.2 billion hryvnias. for transplant operations abroad, we invest in the medical systems of other countries, in the salaries of their doctors - Belarus, India, Turkey, having the same opportunities at home, having the best medical workers in the world. We just need to create conditions for them. If you compare the cost of transplantation abroad - there such operations are much more expensive, sometimes 3-4 times. For the same amount, we can save many more lives if we operate in Ukraine, "said Minister of Health Maxim Stepanov at a briefing on March 25.

To date, a total of more than 30 regulations have been adopted to regulate the work of the industry. The most important of these are the Government Decree on Bioimplants and Skin Transplants and the Decree on a Single Aeromedical Space to Assist in the Transport of Organs for Transplantation.

Okhmatdyt has been actively preparing for the last three years, sending doctors on internships abroad to make kidney transplants in the country’s main children’s hospital a reality. March 11 (symbolically, World Kidney Day) 2021 is a historic day for the institution and for the country as a whole. From now on, NDSL Okhmatdyt is ready to put similar kidney transplant operations (both family and posthumous) on stream. More than 30 children are waiting for a kidney transplant in its walls alone. The important thing is that abroad such an operation costs about 65 thousand dollars, in Ukraine - for free, the state has borne all the costs. Moreover, in the near future, Okhmatdit’s doctors plan liver transplant operations. About 15 children are already waiting for them. Another surprisingly good news is that the Lviv City Children’s Clinical Hospital has received a license for organ transplantation and palliative care.
According to the Lviv City Council, the City Children’s Hospital conducts pre-transplant preparation of the child and post-transplant observation. Unfortunately, the transplant itself, due to imperfect Ukrainian legislation, was carried out abroad until last year (Belgium, Warsaw). But from now on we are ready to carry out such transplants directly on the basis of the hospital. This means that Lviv will become the first center of western Ukraine to start such crucial children’s operations.

Also on March 26, 2021, Oleksandr Lysytsia and his team performed the sixth bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor at the Okhmatdyt NDSL, and the second in 2021. The 11-month-old Ukrainian got his chance to live at home in Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian Register of Bone Marrow Donors, the donor was found in the World Register. He was a girl from Poland, who immediately volunteered to help her "genetic twin". "You will help, because you can. Because you have it in your genes. "

So, we continue to follow the events in the transplant industry and hope that we will inform only with good news!
