Ukraine ranks 20th in the world charity rankings

In four years, Ukraine has risen from 81st to 20th place in the World Giving Index. All three indicators (cash donations, assistance to strangers and volunteering) improved, and the aggregate index was 43% (for comparison in 2018 - 29%).

These are the data of the new World Charity Index , presented by CAF and Gallup’s World View World Poll. The ranking reflects the state of private charity in 2020, when the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic was raging around the world. The study was conducted in 114 countries, which is about 90% of the adult population of the Earth.Nearly 3 billion people worldwide (54.9%) said they helped strangers in 2020. This figure is higher than ever in the history of the rating. Also, more people than before donated money to charities. Volunteering remained at the previous level (19%).

Leading economies are not included in the top 10 for the first time

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected charities in the United States, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, which have fallen sharply. Most Western countries, which are usually in the top 10, have fallen to lower rankings (excluding Australia and New Zealand).

The first place was taken by Indonesia, the second - Kenya, and three African countries (Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda) entered the TOP-10 for the first time.

The World Charity Index is a global study by the Charites Aid Foundation (CAF) and Gallup’s World View World Poll, which has involved 1.6 million people since 2009.

The rating is based on a Gallup survey that analyzes people’s behavior over the past month. The country’s place in the ranking depends on the average value of three indicators:

- Cash donations to charities;
- Volunteering;
- Providing assistance to a needy stranger.
